The Roc Nation signee J. Cole just dropped a new song “Grew Up Fast” earlier. He released the track for his Twitter fans after reaching 2 million followers, and after bumping it all day I’m finally ready to evaluate the song. First off, the production is fucking ill on this track. I was a little bummed after learning Cole didn’t produce the track himself like he has in past songs, but its for sure an epic instrumental. The 1969 throwback “The Double Cross” by David Ruffin (who was in The Temptations) was sampled perfectly by Canei Finch to fit the soulful beat. Lyrically he spits about how some rap is starting to sound too much like electronic music (Fuck Flo Rida). Agreed. Dope track, so listen to it now below and download J. Cole’s “Grew Up Fast” here.
“It’s only right I brought back the soul/ Ya’ll got way too electro, damn near techno/ Halfway homo, way too metro,” – J. Cole
